CHILD ABANDONMENT

A parent's intentional failure to provide any financial assistance to or to communicate with his or her child(ren) over an extended period of time.  A court may deem the child abandoned by that particular parent and may order that individual's parental rights terminated.

The act of leaving a child without any intention of returning.  When a child is physically abandoned they are usually placed in orphanages and made available for adoption.
