GARNISHMENT

A court-ordered process that takes money and/or property from an individual in order to satisfy a debt.  The process includes petitioning the court for an order directing funds to be held from a debtor in order to pay a debt they owe to another individual or entity.  This often occurs after a judgment has been rendered.  Up to 25% of an individual's wages can be deducted.
