IN CAMERA
Latin phrase for "in chambers". This phrase is used to refer to a
hearing or discussion with the judge in the privacy of his/her chambers
or when spectators and jurors have been excluded for the courtroom.
Typically, this type of proceedings is held to protect victims and
witnesses from public exposure, especially if the victim or witness is a
child. There is still a record made of the proceedings, usually by
a court stenographer, however, the judge may decide to seal this record
if the material is extremely sensitive or likely to prejudice one side or
the other.
