PALIMONY
A non-legal term used to describe the division of property or
alimony-like support given to one person in cases where a couple was not
married, but lived together for a substantial period of time and then
terminated the relationship.
One key issue in a palimony case is deciding the line between a mutual
"affair" and an actual relationship. Written palimony agreements
are rare, but in the past, courts have found "implied" contracts.
Usually when a woman has given up her career, managed the household or
assisted in the man's business for a lengthy period of time. Due to
the uncertainty and enormous extent of circumstances on a case by case
basis, each palimony case must be decided upon separately.
