Arizona child support is based upon laws that were passed as a result of Federal laws.  In fact, the support in all states is directly governed by Federal Law.  The Federal laws are based upon research that shows how much support is provided to children in intact families at different income levels.  The Federal laws compel the states to implement certain support guidelines for Arizona to continue to receive Federal Funding.   These Federal laws also govern the realm of support collection and enforcement in the various states.

Arizona child support is calculated using a written set of guidelines. The amount of support calculated using the guidelines will be binding on the Court and the parties, unless the Court determines that such an amount is unjust or inappropriate.

In Arizona, there is a requirement that certain basis factors be considered by the Court when structuring an Order for support. The factors that would be taken into consideration include, the child's and parents' financial resources, as well as the standard of living the child would have enjoyed had the marriage not been dissolved. Another factor is the physical, emotional and educational needs of the child, along with any destruction, concealment, fraudulent disposition, or excessive expenditure of jointly-held property. Finally, the duration of child's visitation and any other related expenses may also be taken into consideration in the determination of support. Marital misconduct is not taken into consideration for determining an amount for child support.

Arizona child support must be paid through the Court absent a contrary agreement between the parties. Any Order issued by the Court must direct one or both parent to provide medical insurance and uncovered medical expenses for the child.

Arizona child support terminates at the age of 18, or until the child graduates from high school. The parents may not be ordered to pay for the child's college expenses or tuition.
