Connecticut child support, support collection and support enforcement result from Federal laws intended to provide a level of support for children of divorce that is similar to that provided to children in intact families.  For Connecticut to continue to receive Federal aid under certain programs, Connecticut must maintain support, support collection and support enforcement statutes that conform to Federal mandates.

Connecticut child support is derived using a specific written guideline. The amount of support arrived at under the guidelines is presumed correct unless it is shown that the amount of support is inequitable or inappropriate.  The Court can deviate from the written guidelines when it considers certain factors. These factors include the estate and needs of the child, the financial resources, means and earning capacity of the parents and child, along with the employability, vocational skills, and occupation of the parents and child. The age, health and station of the parents and child is also taken into consideration when determining  support outside of the guidelines.

Connecticut support terminates when the child reaches 18 years of age. In addition, the Court may also order either parent to provide health insurance for the child.
