Idaho child support, like the support in all states, is directly governed by Federal Law.  The Federal Government has promulgated a series of laws and regulations that compel the states to implement certain laws pertaining to child support for Idaho to continue to receive Federal Funding.   These laws are based upon a substantial body of research pertaining to the amount of support provided to children in intact families at different income levels.  These laws also govern the realm of support collection and enforcement in the various states.

Idaho child support is determined using a set of guidelines. The amount arrived at under the guidelines is presumed correct unless it is shown that such an amount would be inappropriate or unjust. The Court will consider the financial resources of the child and the financial resources, needs and obligation of both the non-custodial and the custodial parent (normally, not including the parent's community property share of the financial resources or obligations with a new spouse). The Court will also consider the standard of living the child enjoyed during the marriage, the availability of reasonable medical insurance coverage for the child and the actual tax benefits achieved by the parent claiming the federal dependency exemption for income tax purposes.

Support in Idaho terminates when the child reaches 18 years of age.
