Massachusetts child support is based upon official guidelines. The amount of child support arrived at under the Massachusetts guidelines is presumed to be correct unless it is shown that the amount would be unjust or inappropriate.

Massachusetts child support amounts may deviate from the guidelines if the Court deems appropriate by factoring in certain criteria. The Court will look at if the non-custodial parent has other minor children with insufficient financial resources available or if the parent has extraordinary expenses, such as travel-related visitation expenses or uninsured medical expenses, etc. The Court may also take any other unusual circumstances into account when determining an appropriate child support amount.

Massachusetts child support laws, just like the support laws in all other states, has been determined by the Federal Government.  For Massachusetts to receive Federal funding under certain important programs, Massachusetts must comply with Federal support laws.  Those laws include issues pertaining to basic support, support enforcement, and support collection.   The Federal Government created the mandates on support amounts after undertaking research to determine how much intact families spend on their children.  The Government's objective was to ensure that children of divorce would receive the same level of support.
