Michigan child support is calculated based upon a formula. The amount of child support derived from the formula is presumed to be correct unless it is shown to be unjust or inappropriate. A Michigan child support Order may include provisions for medical care, child care, and educational expenses of the child. A Michigan Divorce Judgment must include a provision that requires one or both of the parents to provide health care coverage, if such coverage is available at a reasonable cost as a benefit of employment. All payments of child support shall be ordered to be make through the Michigan Friend of the Court Bureau.

Michigan child support, support collection, and support enforcement laws are, like the support laws in all states, based directly upon Federal Law.  Federal Law provides that states that do not comply with the Federal mandates will not receive Federal funding under certain programs.  As a result, all of the states have complied with the Federal Government's dictates regarding support.  The reason for the Federal mandates is to maintain the support of children at the same level that they receive in intact families when the family divides.  The actual support percentages and amounts set by the Federal Government are based upon studies on this issue.
