Ohio child support is based upon official guidelines that are presumed to be correct unless there is a showing that the amount of the support award would be unjust or inappropriate. The Court may consider certain factors in considering the appropriate amount of child support.

Ohio child support awards may deviate based upon the age, financial resources, earning capacity, physical and emotion condition along with any medical, educational, special or unusual needs of the child. The parent's obligation for other minor or handicapped children, benefits that either parent receives from remarriage or sharing living expenses with others, any significant contributions from a parent (including lessons, sports equipment or clothing), extended visitation or extraordinary costs for visitation may also affect the Court's decision in awarding child support. Ohio Court's may also look at the relative financial resources, earning ability, other assets and resources, needs and obligation of both the non-custodial and the custodial parent, the value of services contributed by the custodial parent, other court-ordered payments, mandatory wage deductions (including union dues) as well as the amount of taxes paid by a parent. If there is any disparity in income between the parents' households along with the standard of living and circumstances of each parent and the standard of living the child would have enjoyed if the marriage had not been dissolved these may also be considered by the Court.

Ohio child support is based upon Federal mandates.  The Federal Government has directed the child support laws of all states for fifteen plus years by denying Federal aid to states that do not implement support laws, including support collection and enforcement, that conform to Federal guidelines.
